One rat is never one rat
Rats move along walls, at night, and avoid open floor. The one you saw was out because the better spots were taken. A grocery, a café or a warehouse that takes deliveries every day gets a new arrival with every delivery, and a house next to a vacant lot gets them from the field.
Baiting and trapping
We place tamper-proof bait stations on the runs themselves, along the walls and behind stock where the droppings are, so the bait is taken where the rats already travel and cannot be reached by a child, a dog or a customer. Where bait is not appropriate, near open food or where a dead rat in a wall would be a worse problem, we run a multi-catch trap system instead, and check it.
A programme, not a visit
For a food business or a warehouse the answer is a monitoring programme: stations and traps checked on a schedule, refilled before they run out, with a record of activity so you can see it falling. For a house it is usually a treatment plus a follow-up, and some honest advice about the gap under the door.

Questions about rodent control
Is the bait safe around children and pets?
The stations are locked and anchored, so the bait cannot be reached by hands or paws. In a house with pets we place them where the pets do not go, or use traps instead.
What about the smell if one dies in the wall?
This is why placement matters. Stations go on the runs near the entry points so rats are heading out, not in, when the bait takes effect. Where that cannot be arranged we use traps.
